Ground Source Heat Pumps

How a Ground Source Heat Pump Works

The system works by circulating a water-based fluid through a network of pipes buried in the ground, either in horizontal trenches across a garden or field or in vertical boreholes drilled deep into the earth where outdoor space is more limited. The fluid absorbs heat from the ground and carries it to the heat pump unit indoors, where a compressor raises the temperature further.

The resulting heat is then distributed throughout the home via radiators or underfloor heating and used to heat domestic hot water stored in a dedicated cylinder.

The choice between horizontal ground loops and vertical boreholes depends on the available land and the geology of your site. Our engineers will assess your property and advise on the most appropriate approach, taking into account the space you have available and the size of the system required.

Is a Ground Source Heat Pump Right for Your Property?

Ground-source heat pumps are not suitable for every property; the availability of adequate outdoor space for ground loops or the feasibility of drilling boreholes will determine whether this system is viable for your home. Properties with larger gardens, paddocks or adjacent land are often well-placed for ground loop systems, while urban or smaller plots may require boreholes or may be better served by an air source alternative.

Our team will carry out an honest and thorough assessment of your property before making any recommendations. If a ground-source property heat pump is the right solution, we’ll design a system that maximises the efficiency and longevity of your investment.

If it’s not the most practical option, we’ll tell you clearly and point you towards the alternative that best suits your circumstances.
